Open Day at Co-operative Nursery   2 comments

This morning I did a bit of ‘gate crashing’!!

My friend Carol had been invited to the open day of the new co-operative day nursery in Kidderminster (which is very local to Carol’s home / setting. It did say on the invite that she could bring along other people so technically it was not real gate crashing – more of taking advantage.

I had two reasons for wanting to go

1. My good friend, colleague and professional sounding board Laura Henry had been asked to do a couple of presentations

2. I wanted to be nosy!!!

Carol and I arrived early but were made to feel very welcome and given a guided tour of the nursery.

We met the manager and some of the staff and were able to ask lots of questions and have professional debate.

The setting is lovely, light, bright – and hardly any plastic in sight. Plenty of natural and recycled resources, free flow outdoor access. Lots of lovey community playthings furniture and resources.

Of course I am biased and will always prefer a childminder setting but what struck me was the manager’s (and staff’s willingness to work in partnership with local childminders.

Our contact details were taken (Carol’s, mine and our colleague Lynn’s), we were told that as the nursery does not have any under two’s booked in for December – we could use the under two room and bring our minded children along to play. We were even entered into the free raffle.

And the manager wants to visit our settings – she (and the staff) have an excellent understanding of parents need for choice and the difference between nursery settings and childminder settings – but also showed her understanding of childminding and the things we have in common such as the EYFS.

We stayed to listen to Laura’s talk which was aimed at parents and covered the EYFS at home. Once again we were made welcome and fully included – and were offered refreshments.

I wish the nursery every success as I do not see them as competition to my setting at all – we offer different types of care and different setting, but just from the open day I could see and feel their ethos and values- and know that is similar to my own ethos and values.

I am really looking forward to working in partnership with the Kidderminster co-operative nursery.

Oh and it was good to see Laura.

Thank you everyone for your warm welcome.

  1. Thanks, Penny! I agree with you Babita has created an excellent nursery and the values mirror mine as well. I am so pleased that Babita and her team are willing to work with local Childminders. You are so right not about competition. But, more in line with sharing ideas, resources and experiences with each other as professionals. Ultimately, this will enhance practice locally and improve children’s learning and development.

  2. Its really good blog post. Thanks for sharing the information about your site. Please keep it continue………………..
